Yeah, the original plot bunny I had for that wouldn't have him awakening his heritage himself at all, instead Hojo would awaken it during the years he was experimenting on Cloud, but that wouldn't fit in too well with this story. Either Cloud was just born with 'the Planet's favour' or during the time he spent exploring the mountains around Nibelheim he accidentally did something that awakened his heritage.
