Well, one way or not I still see it as a kind of communication, they do seem to work towards giving the other what he needs/wants and making sure nothing goes wrong along the way. Sephiroth's relationship with Angeal is starting to seem more and more abusive in contrast.
Also a commenter before me mentioned the pace of the story, and I must say, it wasn't too fast for me nor did I find the jumps disconnecting. But that's just me preferring plot development over finely detailed descriptions.
