I had some difficulties getting into it again because it was a rather abrupt change from the...application time
I can see how that could cause problems, but nothing special happened between the time Brangwen joined Cloud's guard and now, so I didn't see any reason to show it.
But I rather liked it. It gave a good idea of the relationship of Scarlet and Elena.
Thanks I hadn't done much development of that relationship in Indenture, so it was nice to revisit it from Scarlet's viewpoint.
I wonder if they'll be very heartbroken when Elena has to leave
Not really. They both knew they'd be separated at some point, so while they do love each other it isn't the sort of all-consuming love that would create too much in the way of heartbreak. Elena's more bothered by how long it takes for Brangwen to meet with her, and Rowan made a point of spending extra time with Scarlet after she gave Elena to Cloud.
