In Omar's defence his consort is very submissive and she really did think their consorting was incredibly romantic. Also Rafiyah's father has made sure to stop her kneeling to him whenever he could - which should have been a hint to Omar, but he really isn't very smart.
Omar made a botch of negotiating Rafiyah's contract, partly because his father didn't bother briefing him properly on what Rafiyah needed from it.
